The official language of the congress is English.

 

Letter of invitation

A letter of invitation will only be issued upon request. This is to facilitate the delegate’s travel and visa arrangements. The invitation does not imply provision of financial or other support or commitments by the organising committee.

 

Certificate of attendance

A certificate of attendance will be issued to all registered delegates.

 

Instructions to Presenters

A slide preview room will be made available at the conference venue.

 

Poster Exhibition

The poster exhibition will be held within the conference venue.  Please see details in the section on Oral and Poster Presentations.

 

Trade Exhibition

A trade exhibition will be held at the conference venue. The layout for the exhibition booths is shown in Appendix 1. Those interested to participate are advised to contact the secretariat directly.

Those who pay the full registration fee are entitled to attend all the conference activities in addition to receiving a conference bag and the conference publications. Accompanying persons are entitled to attend the welcome reception and the informal night

 

Cancellations and refunds

The congress secretariat MUST be notified of all cancellations. All requests for cancellation MUST be in writing and postmarked and the policy for refunds are as follows:-

 

Before 15th August 2004         50% of registration fees will be charged as handling fee

After 15th August 2004            NO refund of registration fees will be entertained

 

Hotel Accommodation

Accommodation will be available at the Sutera Harbour Resort, which is the conference venue, as well as other supporting hotels. Reservations can be made by returning the hotel registration form (insert) to the Secretariat.

 

Free Paper Presentation

All abstracts must be submitted by 15th of June 2004 using appropriate form (Insert). Please read the instructions in the section on Oral and Poster Presentation for the rules and details. Those wishing to be considered for the MPA/ASPID Young Investigator Award should tick the appropriate box in the form. A completed registration form inclusive of fees MUST accompany all abstracts. Those without a complete registration form will be automatically rejected.

 

Continuing Medical Education Points

This Congress will be accredited by the Malaysian Medical Council with CME points.

Opening Ceremony

 

The opening ceremony will be held on Thursday, 2nd of September 2004, at 0900 hrs, in the Grand Ballroom.

 

 

Welcoming Dinner

 

There will be a Welcome Reception followed by Dinner on Wednesday, 1st of September 2004 at 2000 hrs. Participants and accompanying persons are all invited.

 

 

Conference Banquet

 

This will be held at the Grand Ballroom on the 3rd of September 2004 from 2000-2300hrs. In addition to a delightful eight-course Chinese dinner, guests will be entertained to a variety performance. All participants are admitted free of charge. Dinner tickets for accompanying persons can be purchased from the secretariat for RM50.00.

 

 

Informal night

 

An informal night will be held on the 2nd of September 2004, at 2000 hrs, in the Grand Ballroom. Again, there will be plenty of food which this time will be served hawker-style from a variety of stalls. In addition, there will also be performances, table games, a lucky draw etc. Don’t miss this night!

 

 

Local tours

 

These tours are optional and they are available for booking before and during the congress. The places however will be limited. Enquires and bookings can be made at the secretariat or hotel.

 

 

 


General Information

 

Entry into Malaysia

 

A valid passport (and visa wherever applicable) is required of all persons entering Malaysia.  Please enquire from the Malaysian Embassy in your country regarding visa requirements

Population: 24 million.         

Main ethnic groups: Malays, Chinese and Indians.          

 

 

Climate and Dress

 

Located between 1 and 7 degrees north of the Equator, Malaysia enjoys a warm and humid tropical climate.  The average temperature is 26 degrees Celcius, humidity is in excess of 80% and rainfall can be heavy.  The month of June, however, is the dry season and rain will not be expected.  Light cotton clothes are recommended for outdoor travelling.  A light jacket may be needed in the air-conditioned conference halls.  Dressing in most functions is usually informal except for the Conference Banquet, on the 3rd of September 2004.

Flight Information : Kota Kinabalu, Sabah via Kuala Lumpur.

 

At the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA)

 

If you are travelling to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah via KLIA, follow the yellow coloured-coded signage taking you to the Main Terminal Building (via the Aerotrain), through Immigration and Baggage Claim. Complimentary baggage trolleys are freely available. If you are planning to stopover in Kuala Lumpur, after clearing Customs, you need to decide whether you want to travel to your hotel in the Airport Taxi / Limousine or the Airport Coach if nobody is waiting for you. If you are taking a connecting a connecting flight to Kota Kinabalu, the airport signage will direct you to the appropriate counter.  

 

 

Transport

 

From the KLIA airport to your Hotel

 

1. Airport Taxi/Limousine : After clearing Customs, you will see the Airport Limousine counter just before you leave the Arrival Hall.  Purchase your voucher at the counter and proceed to the designated gates to board the taxis.  Single journey fares to your hotel are RM 66.70 for the Budget Service and RM 91.70 for the Premier Service (add 30% surcharge between midnight and 6 am).  Return fares at a discount (RM 100.40 for Budget and RM 147.40 for Premier) can also be obtained.  After purchasing your vouchers, proceed to Gate No. 3 for Budget or Gate No. 5 for Premier.

 

Please avoid taxi drivers who approach you in the Arrival Concourse.

 

2. Airport Coach: When you leave the departure hall into the main arrival concourse, continue to follow the yellow coloured-coded signs indicating ‘Bus’.  You will need to take the elevator down to the basement level and walk a short distance and take an escalator down until you reach the ticket counter.  Alternatively, you can purchase the coach ticket from the counter in the arrival concourse and proceed down to the Bus Terminal.  A single journey fare to your hotel is RM 25 (about US$ 6.60) and coaches leave every 30 minutes; travelling time is 1 hour.  The air-conditioned Airport Coach will take you to the Jalan Duta Airport Coach Terminal in Kuala Lumpur (about one-hour travelling time) from where you will transfer to a smaller vehicle to be sent to your hotel.  The Airport Coach Service operates from 6.45 am to midnight only.

 

3. KLIA Express:  Tickets for the KLIA Express train can be purchased from machines just as you leave the arrival hall or at the station located on the

 

4. Car Rental is also available at the KLIA.  All major credit cards are accepted.

 

 

Transport within Kuala Lumpur

 

Taxis can be obtained easily by your hotel concierge or by flagging one by the roadside or at specified taxi stop areas in the city.  All taxi fares are charged using the meter – the starting fare is RM 2.00 and the subsequent rate is 10 sen per kilometre.  Buses and the Light Rail Transport (LRT) commuter trains are also available.

 

Currency

 

The Malaysian currency is the Ringgit Malaysia (RM) and the smaller denomination is the sen (pronounced as sayn).  One hundred sen make RM1.00 (just like 100 cents make 1 dollar).

 

Credit Cards

 

All major credit cards are accepted in all shopping complexes throughout Malaysia.  Cash is preferred in smaller shops where things can be marginally cheaper.  Hotels will accept Visa, MasterCard and American Express with no questions asked.  Conference registration can also be done using these credit cards.

 

Customs Formalities

 

Visitors bringing in dutiable goods will have to pay a refundable deposit of 50% of the value for temporary importation.  Please be reminded that the TRAFFICKING OF ILLICIT DRUGS is a serious offence in Malaysia and carries a MANDATORY DEATH PENALTY upon conviction.

 

In addition to the usual Immigration and Customs forms a Travellers Declaration Form also needs to be filled in at entry into Malaysia.  Non-resident travellers may bring into Malaysia ringgit notes up to RM 1,000 and any amount of foreign currency.  On departure, they are allowed to take with them up to RM 1,000 in ringgit notes and foreign currency of up to the amount they brought into the country on arrival.

 

Electricity : 220-240 volts AC at 50 cycles per second.

 

Water : Tap water in hotels is generally safe for direct consumption.

 

Tipping : This is not a practice in Malaysia generally.  Most hotels and restaurants tag a service charge in addition to the government tax included in the bill.

 

Airport Tax : Upon departure, an airport tax of RM 40 per passenger above two years old is collected for international flights (inclusive of Brunei and Singapore).  For domestic flights, the tax is RM 5.

 

Sabah

 

Sabah sits on the tip of Borneo, the world’s third largest island. Its coastline of 1,440 km, is washed by the South China Sea on the West and the Sulu Sea and Celebes Sea on the East, encloses an inland area of 74,500 sq metres.  It lies just North of the equator, and enjoys a sunny tropical climate all year around. Daily temperatures ranges from 74 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit (23 to 33 degrees Centigrade), with cooler weather up in the mountains.  A land blessed with many of nature’s bountiful treasures, Sabah is also known romantically as “ The Land beneath the Wind”.

 

Flight Information: Kota Kinabalu, Sabah

 

Kota Kinabalu is the international gateway to Sabah. It has direct flights to and from the main capital in the region.  Malaysia Airlines and other airlines operate daily flights from Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Hong Kong, Manila, Bandar Seri Begawan, Seoul, Taipei and Tokyo. Within Borneo, Malaysia Airlines operates to most of the towns in Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei.

 

Local Transportation To/ from the Airport


Taxis are available from the airport and cost about RM12.00 (~USD 3.50) to Kota Kinabalu City Center and about RM14.00 (~USD 4.00) to Sutera Harbour Resort. Taxi coupons can be purchased from the Airport Taxi counter.

 

Liability

 

The Organising Committee will not be liable for personal accidents, loss or damage to private properties of registered participants during the congress. Participants are advised to make their own arrangements with respect to personal insurance.

The Organising Committee shall make every attempt to ensure that all scheduled program and events take place as planned. However, the committee reserves the right to make changes up to the last minute, should the need arise.


Local Sightseeing Spots

 

Atkinson Tower

 

This is one of the most enduring landmarks of Kota Kinabalu city that has stood prominently on the bluff along Signal Hill Road. It was built as a memorial to Francis George Atkinson, the popular first District Officer of Kota Kinabalu. This memorial has the distinction of being the oldest standing structure in the whole of Sabah that survived the air raids and blitz of World War II.


Kota Kinabalu City Bird Sanctuary


This is a natural site for wildlife and is located in the heart of the city. The Bird Sanctuary has an important natural function and is a feeding ground for many species of birds including several migratory species from Northern Asia.

 

Gaya Street Fair


Held every Sunday morning, this is the place where locals come to buy their goods. You can find almost anything at the fair from local handicrafts to animals like chicken and pets, which can be purchased for at reasonable prices. It is also a good opportunity to practice your bargaining skills.


Sabah Museum


The Sabah State Museum is located on the Old Palace Hill (Bukit Istana Lama) only 5 minutes from Kota Kinabalu City center on 43.3 acres of lush green natural and planted jungle. This location houses not only the Museum but also an Ethno Botanic Garden – a zoological garden, and a heritage village all in one place.

 

Signal Hill


This is one of the best places to get a good view of KK City. The hill is in a natural area where one can peacefully enjoy the beautiful skyline of the city with a view that extends to the islands.


Tunku Abdul Rahman Islands Park


Located just 3 to 8 km off KK’s shore and only 10 to 20 minutes by boat, you can enjoy the beautiful tropical islands and indulge in lots of R&R. Some of the islands are equipped with chalets and food outlets to accommodate your needs. The park consists of five islands, namely Gaya, Mamutik, Manukan, Sapi and Sulug.
