The 5th MPA Weekend Rendezvous was held in Genting Seri Malaysia Hotel on 18-19 November 2000. The topics covered were the management of chronically ill children with excellent lectures from an impressive array of local speakers. The turnout was good and the lecture room was packed. Seventy doctors, mainly trainees and young private paediatricians, and nurses attended the Rendezvous.

The weekend started with many taking a scenic tranquil drive to Genting Seri Malaysia early Saturday morning. At 1000 hr, Dr Zasmani Shafie commenced the series of topics by telling us the definitions and characteristics of autism, the facilities available for treatment and the location of such facilities throughout the country. This was followed by the much awaited tea break. Associate Professor Dr. Chan Lee Lee then took us through a life long journey of management of the Thalassaemic patient from womb to tomb, the ideals and the constraints. Dr Sofiah Ali updated us on the classification and the long term management of epileptic patients especially the difficult epilepsies.

Chronic heart failure in children is not uncommon in Malaysia, contributed mainly by chronic rheumatic heart disease and the grown-up congenital heart disease. Professor Zulkifli Ismail reviewed the conventional pathophysiology of heart failure and the right mix of antifailure drugs. Systemic lupus erythromatosus(SLE) though uncommon in children, is a chronic disease that is feared by many, patients and doctors alike, especially in patients with renal involvement. Dr Wan Jazilah Wan Ismail shared with us her extensive literature review and experience on the diagnosis and management of children with SLE. The last lecture of the day was on haemophilia by Associate Professor Dr. Chan Lee Lee.

The cool sunny weather of the day turned gloomy and started to drizzle by evening. Many were disappointed as we had to forego our traditional volleyball game at the end of the day. However, a few could not resist the beautiful scenery and fresh air outdoor, the drizzle did not stop them from taking a slow stroll in the drizzle and had a breather of the cool fresh air of Genting.

After dinner, the enthusiasts and those preparing for examination had clinical case discussion and picture quiz. The MPA executive committee, meantime, had a long executive committee meeting till the early hours of Sunday.

In contrast to Saturday evening, Sunday was bright and sunny. Dr Patrick Chan started the day refreshing everyone present of the importance of managing the asthmatic patients in all aspects of their lives. As chronic diseases take a great toll on the psychological and psychiatric aspects of life, Dr Zasmani Shafie elaborated on the possible psychiatric problems, their recognition and management. Dr Mardziah Alias ended the Weekend Rendezvous by sharing many of her slides on chronic skin diseases and her experience in managing such problems. It was then followed by lunch and another nice scenic drive home.

The speakers included:

Dr Zasmani Shafie Autism
Prof Chan LL (2 lectures) Thalassaemia / Haemophilia
Dr Sofiah Ali Epilepsy

Once again we would like to express our gratitude to the speakers for kindly spending their weekend updating and educating the paediatric trainees. The MPA would also like to thank Dr Hung LC and her team for organising this Rendezvous. The proceedings went smoothly and as usual the atmosphere was cool and relaxed.
