The 19 September 2000 Sun Newspaper - Malaysian Paediatric Foundation Rat Race

The rat race modelled after the annual event at Wall Street, New York became a reality despite a heavy down pour. Companies around the KL Golden Triangle area sponsored participants to take part in the 4km run. Due to the rain the course was shortened to 2.4km.Many an enthusiastic executive in office attire were seen participating in the run and of course finishing drenched in the rain.

The total amount collected was RM$354,000.00

Picture: The cheque was received the same evening by MPF Chairman, Prof. Datuk Sham Kasim and witnessed by Prof. Zulkifli Ismail and Dr Hung Liang Choo. The proceeds will go to providing essential equipment for deprived hospitals.

Wet Rat Race 2000 – 19 September - Berita MPA report

This fund-raising event organised by the Sun and the Edge newspapers will help to raise funds to buy equipment for children’s wards in hospitals that need them.  It is intended for the purchase of syringe pumps, infusion pumps, pulse oximeters, incubators, etc.  Funds collected will be channelled through the Malaysian Paediatric Foundation.

The Rat Race, modelled after the annual event at Wall Street, became a reality on 19th September 2000 despite a heavy downpour.  Companies around the Kuala Lumpur Golden Triangle area sponsored participants to take part in the run.  It was participated by enthusiastic executives in their (soaked) office attire.

Thirty-one companies fielded two hundred  participants in the event which had to be delayed from 5.45 pm to 6.15 pm due to the heavy rain. The rain also made the organisers shorten the route from the original 4 km to 2.4 km, and 173 participants completed the whole course (the 22 who did not report back at the finish line presumably stopped off at the many bistros and pubs along the way).  The total amount collected was RM 354,000.00, and all this was done in just a little over a month.  MPA thanks the Sun and the Edge newspapers for deciding to make the MPF the beneficiary of the first ever Rat Race in Asia. Our members working in all the hospitals will certainly appreciate the equipment donated and ensure that it improves the quality of care at their respective hospitals, throughout Malaysia.
