Parenting magazine launchedTHE Malaysian Paediatric Association (MPA) launched Positive Parenting, the country's first educational magazine by child, maternal and nutrition experts, last week. The magazine was unveiled by Women and Family Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil. Involving the collaboration of the Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society of Malaysia (OGSM), the Nutrition Society of Malaysia as well as consultants in other related disciplines, the magazine covers common parental concerns that emerge especially during pregnancy and the first 10 years of life. These include a normal pregnancy and safe childbirth, caring for newborns and infants, providing adequate nutrition for children, protecting them from infections, diseases and injury, and promoting their cognitive, intellectual, emotional and social development. The information and advice is consistent with contemporary Malaysian family lifestyles and time-honoured values and is presented in a parent-friendly style. According to MPA president Prof Dr Zulkifli Ismail, the magazine reflects the importance of parents gaining a good understanding of how children grow and develop, as well as their physical and emotional needs. “The more parents understand their children, the greater their parenting abilities will be,” he said. Parental knowledge and awareness could also go a long way towards protecting children, he added. Positive Parenting will be published once every two months and will be available free at clinics and hospitals where MPA and OGSM members are based. Parents who wish to have the magazine delivered to their homes can request accordingly at a cost of RM2 per issue to cover postage and handling. For further information, call the Positive Parenting secretariat at 03-5621 1408.
